Franklin Electronic Publishers, Inc. designs, develops, publishes, and distributes globally innovative electronic language learning solutions on handheld devices, memory media cards, and via Internet downloads.
Franklin owns or has licenses to publish, in electronic format, hundreds of reference titles, including monolingual dictionaries, bilingual dictionaries, encyclopedias, and various other education and trade publications. Franklin also distributes either directly or through its partners more than 42,000 book titles in electronic format.
The Company marketed its first handheld reference device, the Spelling Ace® spelling corrector, in 1986. Franklin learning devices have enriched the lives of students, readers, and professionals alike for two decades. Franklin handhelds are widely used by educators throughout the world and in many cases are integrated into curricula and lesson plans. Franklin products are recognized for assisting students both by fostering independent learning and by building confidence during the learning process. Franklin is committed to supporting national, regional, and local education programs and activities. For example, the Company is an annual supporter of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the USA and the Premier's Spelling Bee in Australia. In addition, Franklin's sponsorship of the MS Readathon is entering its 10th year in Australia and Franklin Scholarships are being launched through 200 Kip McGrath Education Centres, a market leader for tutoring. In 2005, Franklin launched a new handheld platform -- "Pocket Prep™ for the NEW SAT"-- with content provided by The Princeton Review. This launch marked the Company's initiative to enter the handheld electronic standardized test preparation market which includes college prep, graduate school, and language proficiency testing.
In addition to standardized test prep, Franklin is heavily focused on global language learning solutions, targeting, for example, the Hispanic market in the United States and those learning English in the Japanese market. Franklin recently developed and shipped its first product for the Asian market, the Japanese-English Electronic PageMark™ Dictionary, through its distribution partner Seiko Instruments, Inc. This is the first of several language learning products planned for the burgeoning Asian market. Franklin is a market leader in the Middle East and throughout Western Europe where Franklin also recently began distribution of the first SEIKO dictionary product in the German market under license from Langenscheidt, the well known German publishing house.
Through its Proximity Technology Division, Franklin designs and licenses linguistic software to third party software application providers, including Adobe and Sun Microsystems, for spelling error detection/correction and hyphenation functionality in thirty six languages, as well as thesaurus and dictionary functionality.
